U Matters

Can’t think of a week where I have enjoyed meeting so many new people. The Men’s Fellowship Dinner, Newcomers Lunch, Alpha Dinner, and Sunday services have provided some opportunities to meet some wonderful people. As we get to know each other, I hope we can learn from each other. There is individual spiritual growth, and there is church spiritual growth. How can we learn from each other as we seek to follow our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ? I am all ears.

Union supports the Hong Kong Church Network for the Poor (HKCNP) by supporting their 10/10/10 initiative. The goal is to have each church, in October (10), spend ten minutes (10) talking about poverty in HK and then taking an offering where each member gives at least ten dollars (10).  Thank you for your generosity, Union is usually one of the largest donors to this offering.

But this year we want you to take it one step forward. This Sunday we will pass out the “Simple Living Handbook.” Please take it and read it. I dare you to join me in trying to join “One Week Simple Living” challenge. It will be tough but it could transform our lives.

This week we also will commission the various mission trips going out from Union in October and early November.  Let’s be praying for our church, our outreach home and abroad, as we learn to simply follow Christ together.

BUFF Special Announcement

Our development partner, Henderson Land, has been very supportive of the redevelopment of Union Church. However, market forces being what they are in HK and as a public company responsible to its shareholders, Henderson Land decided to accept a very attractive offer and has sold Golden Centre, which was where we were to have our temporary church during the redevelopment period. The new owner has an owner occupier use for the second floor and it is therefore regrettable that Golden Centre as a temporary accommodation is no longer an option.

BUFF is working closely with Henderson Land to resolve our temporary home but in the meantime we would like to outreach to all the congregation as to any ideas you may have for temporary accommodation, no matter how “out of the box” the idea is. We do have alternatives but are not sure whether any of them will translate into reality. Our requirement is simple: a space that will provide a sanctuary with minimum seating capacity for 200 (approx 5000 sq feet net) + back of house offices for the church, meeting etc about 5000 sq feet net. We are entirely flexible to location but for obvious reasons would  like to be as close to the existing church as possible. Other than that, we would consider preferably anywhere in the first instance between North Point and Sheung Wan. We have intensive ongoing request for our needs to government, landlords and agents but there may be someone out there who will provide the solution to our needs. We have a wonderful plan to create a church that will extend the word of God. We would ask that anyone who has any connection or ideas that we as BUFF can pursue, please inform us and we will follow with alacrity. The tide is with us and we should overcome this remaining hurdle.

This Sunday

Bible Series Talks — ‘Teacher Matthew and Warrior Mark’
Talk and Discussion with Pastor Matthew.
2 October, Sunday, 12:30PM – 1:30PM

Matthew’s gospel best records Jesus’ teaching and best incorporates his Jewish heritage. Mark emphasizes Jesus the man of action, especially his greatest act, the redemption of sinners. Join us to discuss these contrasting narratives of the Messiah: one learned and paced, one breathless and brief; one suited for the classroom, the other for life’s battle.

These talks present the theme of God’s grace, and how that grace comes alive and expresses itself through us, as we become more Christ-centered husbands, fathers, neighbours, executives, and leaders in our church. At Emmaus, we begin to understand more fully the presence of Christ in us and his body of believers. Come join us!
