Though formal membership is not explicitly mentioned in the Bible, scriptures do speak of a commitment to a local church (Hebrews 10:25; Ephesians 4:1-16; 1 Corinthians 12:1-31). In the age of individualism formal membership can help provide a sense of stability and connectedness. Membership can accomplish several things:
1) it clarifies and makes public a commitment to spiritual growth and service;
2) it enables individuals to vote when the church decision-making process requires church-wide authority on leadership, yearly budget and significant financial commitments, and
3) it enables eligibility to service in particular leadership roles within the church. When you become a member you are settling in your heart that Union Church is your spiritual home and that you have a vested interest for its well being. The process of membership includes completing a membership form, attending a membership class and meeting with the deacons.
