U Matters

Our theme verse for the Acts sermon series is Acts 1:8, ‘you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.” Last Sunday, we were reminded that the word ‘power’ (dunamis) is rooted in the word dynamite. Because of the Holy Spirit we have tremendous power within each of us. I wonder how often in our day to day living we remember that we have access to this major power source. Power to sustain our fears, our worries, and our uncertainties. Power that enables us to serve, power that enables us to love those who we find difficult, power that enables healing and refreshment and power to try new ministries.

Last weekend at the AGM, new members were added to all of our ministry boards and we are delighted that they are willing to try new ministries. We welcome new Trustees -Jane Arnett and John Li. We welcome new COM members -Emilie Banfield, Christine Yeung, Po Cheung and Koon Wee. We welcome new Deacons -Joshua Ng, Grace Sui, Cornelis Staalman, Malama Piliae, and Wanda Yuen. Additionally, we rejoice and give thanks for those who have served on various leadership teams throughout the year and are finishing their terms. Thank you to the Committee of Management leaders -Anson Wang, Juliana Rotmeyer, Andrew Lo, Doris Cheung and Timothy Ng. Thank you to the deacons -Christine Wu and Catriona Woodrow and to Isabel Morrison who has stepped down from the Trustees.

In the words of the Apostle Paul, “I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being.” Ephesians 3:16

On Saturday, June 27, Union Church held its Annual General Meeting. The members present voted in favour of Pastor Michele Bland being called and appointed as the church’s next Senior Pastor. We will be restarting U-Cafe at the 2nd floor of Hotel Indigo again this coming Sunday, 5th July. Please join us for live worship with a friendly, informal atmosphere.

Union Book Group:  Summer is a great time to read! Our next book is Corrie Ten Boom's The Hiding Place, a story of a Christian family in Holland who hid persecuted Jews. We'll meet Tuesday, July 7, 7:30PM to discuss. All are welcome! Books available at the welcome table, $100.

Missions:

We are holding regular Kindness Walks around Wan Chai, reaching out to bless the poor in our neighbourhood. The next Union Church walk will be on July 12th after the 9:45AM service. If you would like to find out more about Union Church's Kindness Walks, please contact the Missions committee.

Inner City Ministries focuses on helping the ethnic minorities and their families in Hong Kong. One special group of people that Inner City Ministries help are recovering drug addicts. After a year of rehab, many of these individuals cannot find employment, and they quickly slip back into drug abuse. If you know of any job opportunities that are open to hiring rehabilitated individuals, please contact emmanuel@innercityministries.org.

Youth

Dodgebee Tournament – Friday July 3rd. This week we’re doing something a little different! Union Church will be hosting a Dodgebee tournament with other International Church Youth Groups invited to compete! Dodgebee is like dodgeball but with soft foam frisbees – it’s a ton of fun. Kingdom Kids

CRECHE & SUNDAY SCHOOL ARRANGEMENTS for Sunday 5 July 2020 and until further notice: The Creche Center will be open with restricted capacity. For children aged 3 years old above, Veggie Tales Movies will be shown in rooms 2&3 with strict hygiene measures and in accordance with the government guidelines. We greatly appreciate your understanding and kind cooperation as we gather and worship God responsibly.  

ONLINE SUNDAY SCHOOL:

3-5 years old students: Fruit of the Spirit Bible study, starting this Sunday via Zoom, from 10.45 am - 11.15 am.  

6 years old and above students: Books of the Bible study, every Sunday via Zoom, from 10.45 am - 11.30 am. 

Kingdom Kids Sunday edition, through Union Church website, app and Facebook, at the end of the 9.45 am and 11.15 am service. 

CHILDREN’S SUMMER PROGRAM

3-5 YEARS OLD - Every Wednesday in July, 10 -11.30 am 

We invite children for a fun Bible story theme learning led by Ms Jacklien and learning about the Gospel for domestic helpers that come along with the children which will be led by our Filipino Pastor, Ruth Tablada. 

6-11 years old - Every Wednesday in July, 3 - 4 pm: Children are invited to join us for a time of arts and crafts. 

U-Singers, 9-13 years old - Every Wednesday in July and August, 4-5 pm: Children are welcome to join a new choir led by Forrest Morr and Chris Yorks. 

For all of the Children’s Summer Programs, we require a minimum number of 12 children in order for the program to proceed. Sign up HERE
