U Matters

Author Philip Yancey, who spoke at Union Church a number of years ago, stated that when he goes to church, he has learned to look up, look around, look outward, and look inward.

We need to look up, mindful that God is the audience of our worship and that everything else serves as prompters for us to engage in the living God. The goal of worship is to meet God, that is our only focus.

We need to look around. It is important that we are mindful of who is worshipping with us. Christ transcends culture, age, socio-economic status, gender and differences. It is His reconciling love that is the basis for our community. This Saturday join Anto and other Union men for a BBQ, and get to know the Union community better.

We need to look outward and actively serve others. Church is a verb, an action word and as followers of Christ we are called to action. We need to be intentional in fulfilling the Great Commission and stand in the gap for those in need. We need to be salt and light in our communities, in our homes and in the workplace.

We need to look inward. That is, we need to be mindful of the needs of the people in our congregation. Being the church is ‘rejoicing with those who rejoice and mourning with those who mourn.’ Being the church means we are engaged in all the ‘one anothering’ passages.

When I think of needs, I am mindful that Jacklien Lee, our Children’s Ministry Director, is in need of some Vacation Bible School teachers and helpers for the month of August. She is also in need of some Sunday School teachers in the fall.

There is a lot going on in our city and in the lives of people within our faith community. As we learn to ‘do church’ together may, “the word of Christ[a] dwell in you richly…(may you) teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. Colossians 3:16

Blessings,

Pastor Michele
