Michael Birley (Birley Michael Antony Langton)
DEACON'S COURT
I grew up in the North West of England near Manchester and went to school in the English Midlands. After dropping out of medical school to go into shipping, I have worked in the Shipping business for the last 50 years, 29 of them in Hong Kong. Today, together with a Christian brother, I am involved with an investment management company which we stated 16 months ago.
I first came to Hong Kong in 1984, and have two children, Frederica and Monty, from my first marriage. I met Anne (and her children Ceilidh and Zachary) in Hong Kong and we were married at Union Church 14 years ago. It is my great joy to worship together with Anne at Union and to be part of our expanding family.
I was christened and confirmed in the Church of England, but it was not until 2001 that I committed my life to the Lord during an Alpha Course at Holy Trinity Brompton in London. After that I became more involved with Alpha, helping and leading small groups and eventually becoming an Alpha advisor when we moved out of London in 2002. After my first marriage broke up, I found the HTB Divorce and Separation Recovery Course (now known as Restored Lives) to be vital in reconstructing my life. As a result, I have helped on this Restored Lives course in London and eventually assisted other churches to start their own courses, including here at Union Church.
I have served on the Union Church Committee of Management (COM) from 2009-2011, and 2019-2025 including serving as Chairman for the five years. It was also an honour to serve on The Grace of Giving fundraising team for our new church building, and to chair the Property Committee after our move to 22A.
Prayer has been a bedrock for me in my walk and, together with others at Union, we pray weekly for the church and our community, online on Tuesday mornings. A revelation for me has been the importance of the Trinity and the work that Holy Spirit plays in transforming lives and situations.
After the move into our new 22A Kennedy Road building in September 2023, I believe we have opened a new chapter for our church and community. God is moving and the exciting challenge is for us to align our role with His plan for Union, our neighbourhood and Hong Kong.
I am be honored to be invited to join Deacons’ Court and to witness and share the ‘new thing’ that God is doing in and through Union Church (Isaiah 43:19) and to play a part in bringing His plans, insofar as we are able, to fruition.
