U Matters - 02 Nov 2017

31 October 1517 was the start of the Reformation and a major issue was the theological debate about if  we are saved by faith(reliance of God’s grace in Christ) or by works (good deeds.)

31 October 1999 – Lutherans and Catholics released a Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification.  The two “sides” came to an understanding after 482 years.

The declaration affirms that people are indeed saved by faith alone (heartfelt trust in God’s grace) – but that our good works are the entirely appropriate response to such amazing grace.  In sum, “We are saved by faith alone, but not by a faith that is alone.”

This month, Union Church and each of us has the chance to exercise  “a faith that is not alone.” Together we have a major task in front of us.  The move from 22A to Sunlight Towers means that we need to develop whole new ways of doing ministry together.  Additional facilities, programs, and staff will need to be added if we are to continue to grow as a congregation.  Please begin to pray what your role will be and that the Lord will surprise us as we face the challenges and opportunities of ministry together.  It will take grace (relying on God) and works (good giving.)

Gratefully
Pastor Greg
