. “ They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer… They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. ” Acts 2:42 , 46-47 The basic elements of a Small Group are: - Small – A Small Group could have anywhere from 3-12 people attending. In such a group there is room for everyone to participate in sharing, praying, discussion and getting to know each other better.
- Relational – The Small Group is where the Church is able to care for one another and meeting each other’s needs. As members of the group grow in their love and care for one another, lives are transformed. Much of the ministry of a group takes place outside of the ‘meeting’ context as members and their families relate together throughout the week.
- Open – Anyone can come at any time. Member can bring their friends to social events as well as to regular meetings. As Small Group members reach out to those with whom they already have some type of natural affinity, the group will grow and see people becoming Christians.
- Multiplying – The Small Group is sometimes called a ‘cell’ group because like the natural organism it can multiply as it grows. This is imperative because multiplication still allows the group to remain small enough for people to really care. Multiplication also releases the group to reach out to new people, inviting them to become part of the group. This multiplication process causes new leaders to rise up into new ministries of leadership of the new groups.
- Total ministry – The main ministries of a church (worship, discipleship, evangelism, pastoral care) are often done separately from each other, so that the leaders of each ministry often do not know what is happening elsewhere. Small Groups provide a context in which all these ministries can function cooperatively together. This creates a sense of wholeness of ministry within the Small Group, and therefore makes that group’s ministry more fulfilling and exciting. A good Small Group is alike a small church within a larger church.
